Risk factors and injury incidence are aspects that are becoming increasingly more important in sport. Furthermore, a large number of people who have suffered an injury do not receive specialized attention that would allow them to recover the capacities they had before suffering such injury. This Master's Degree aims to offer specific education for professional practice in RTP after sport’s injury, focusing as well on prevention plans, process of specific injuries and control and assessment of the RTP process.

Introduce the student to the knowledge of the return to play process from an academic and professional point of view. While explaining the reality and possibilities of this professional option, two areas that help the development of the profession are introduced: understanding from the emotional point of view of the phases through which an injured athlete passes, and the research methodology adaptation from the point of view of return to play after sport injury.
The agenda on pathology, pathophysiology and harmful mechanisms focuses on the injury of the athlete, both from a macroscopic (the mechanism of injury) and microscopic point of view (study of the understanding of tissue injury by both acute and repetitive mechanisms). The study of harmful mechanisms is essential to be able to understand the way in which different tissues are injured and also to establish the principle that will allow to design tasks for the rehabilitation of the athlete. It is mainly grouped in muscle, tendon and joint injuries.
The study of the harmful incidence and risk factors for injury complete with the study of pathology and the understanding of the athlete’s injury. It is a content focused on knowing what type of injury occurs in different areas of the sports population and in different sports, and analyse the risk factors that according to the literature are associated with each case. For this Master’s degree, the study of neuromuscular risk factors is particularly important, since they are the ones that the professional can influence more in order to modify them.
This topic, once the introduction is made and the different areas related to the injury are studied, is focused on the study of the assessment, and especially the quantification of the risk factors in each case. Quantifying the risk factors and important physical qualities for each athlete will give us fundamental information to know if the RTP process is being carried out properly, in addition to allowing us to make an initial assessment. With this aim, the current methodology on assessment is explained, both from a theoretical and practical point of view, giving to the student the opportunity to manipulate use of the equipment.
The central block of the profession is explained: how the return to play coach will develop his day-to-day work with the athlete. Work blocks are organized about coordination, neuromuscular control, strength, speed of movement and reaction, balance, resistance to these manifestations and cognitive qualities, both perceptive and decision-making. This topic includes, therefore, the knowledge of the tools that the professional will use, and will be treated from a theoretical and a practical point of view.
The content of this subject brings the theoretical and practical knowledge of sports training to the students, so that they can apply them in the process of retraining an athlete. The subject focuses on knowing which contents of the program to analyse and how to sequence and combine them when appropriate. This programming is carried out from the work of the different physical qualities and fundamental sport specific skills, with the intention of reconditioning them with the right sequence.
This subject focuses on the practical development of everything worked in the different areas of the Master’s. Different types of injury are treated, each representative of a specific sport, and is based on two premises: on the one hand, that the content of the subject is taught by professionals in their day to day contact with the return to play of the athlete, and on the other hand, and according to the Master’s direction, that these professionals integrate the practice of all the contents studied during the training.
The Master’s Final Paper is tutored by teachers of the Master’s degree and the distribution of tutors is done according to the theme chosen by the student and matched to each Tutor’s speciality. The possibilities of work development are: review of a topic related to the return to play of the athlete, development of a specific situation of rehabilitation (with previous update of the literature related to the content of the work) and realization of an original work with an intervention on athletes. The tutor guides the completion of the project during the academic year in which the Master’s degree takes place.
